Whoville Bakes

Holiday Baking Fundraiser

As the holiday season rolls around, Whoville is getting ready to bake some cookies to honour the Grinch! Join YSYF on December 22, 2020 from 7-9 PM EST at our virtual baking event to raise funds for a holiday feeding program for families in Ghana, and the sponsorship of women into vocational training programs.

The session will be led by Ms. Ida Su, baker and founder of Ida’s Cookies in Scarborough and Kensington Market. She is a strong advocate for empowering single mothers like many of our beneficiaries, and has an amazing story herself.

She will be hosting a festive, virtual baking session to teach all of Whoville how to make the Grinch-themed holiday cookies! An ingredients list, consisting mainly of items you already have in your kitchen, will be sent following registration. At the end of the event, there will be an opportunity to submit a picture of your colourful creations so we can vote for our Holiday Cheermeister! Winners will receive an exciting raffle prize, which will be announced at a later date.

Proceeds

In the spirit of giving this holiday season and in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, YSYF is raising funds to support our sisters in Ghana with meal kits and vocational training. Our goal is to provide food hampers for members of the Doryumu community at $25 for a family of 10 people. 100% of proceeds will go directly to food, labour and distribution costs to feed as many families as possible (after platform fees).

In order to distribute on time, we are collecting all funds for the feeding program by December 16, 2020. Donations received after this date will be directed towards sponsoring women into three-month vocational training programs in electricals and sewing at Don Bosco Tech at a cost of $150 per participant. All proceeds will go directly to accommodation, transportation, and labour costs to support beneficiaries. This piece is very important for the sustainability of our work; while responding to immediate needs is important, we believe that the best way to empower women is to equip them with the knowledge, skills and tools required to participate in the economy in the long run.
